This is definitely one of my favorite episodes ever. I love the correlation between the effort that goes into taking the photo and communication with strangers.
Telling two stories that are actually one.
I’m in midtown Manhattan right now for the first time in a year. The hotel is mostly non English speaking guests. A wonderful experience and a reminder of what life should be like. ❤️
I love what the way you detail a relatively brief experience, sharing how paying attention to others and the scene and nature around you is often a beautiful tale to tell.
Jordan, ah what a lovely thing to hear about this post.
I need to share some of the iceberg, the part unseen.
Substack, like all media platforms does a constant job of reminding you when people sign up, and when they unsubscribe. While you know quite well that I am not a "people pleaser" creative, I do have to deal with these notifications. I am always surprised by the immediate unsubscribes to certain posts, and there were four when I published this one. Being a curious person, I figured out that each of these people are not mail bots, not fake accounts but living, breathing artists from the US and the EU. It is so odd, to have them be so repulsed by this free content that they say "I never want to see this again." And yes, the healthy response is "you don't need followers like this" and I truly believe that. What sets me back is that this is how fellow creative people behave, without the thought of the ramifications. They want to discourage me, instead of just turning a blind eye to a post they do not appreciate.
And there are the comments like yours, that suggest that this is not some "meh" post, but a commendable one.
What a world we live in, when both actions carry so much weight. Finding the balance between these truly opposing forces is our new job as artists.
I do not lose sleep over the unsubscribes, but they do make me sad about our community as a whole. It is not kind. It is not patient. It is not supportive. It is anonymous.
So thank you again for commenting, I hope you understand how much that sentence from you means, and the inertia it puts in motion.
David, I like your optimism. That image you see is just the viewfinder. I actually dropped the film off today at the lab - this is a new (and tricky) film stock, a new developer option, etc so all bets are off until I see the actual film come back. But so far, so good!

We are the real United Nations.

And after all is said and done, you got a nice photo!

I look forward to seeing the developed photos!
Me too. This is a whole new chapter for me, if it floats.
