I remember my first walkman. It was the really slim and needed just one AA battery. It looked like this: I would turn it all of the way up, and sing along at the top of my lungs. Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars was always good for the walk to high school, or maybe
All the men in my family run around the house with either noise-canceling headphones (then at least you know they can't hear you want you talk to them), or ear buds, which they tap once they see I'm saying something, and then I have to repeat what I said. I've come to accept that that's the way it is. Unlike you, they're usually not listening to music but have podcasts babbling at them.
I love headphones while rowing indoors. It takes me completely into my body. Nothing exists beyond the beat and the sensation of movement. I find I am 16 when The Boss sings Born to Run! This doesn’t happen when the music is in the air before it finds my ears, my brain. I’ve always wondered if it was just me.

Haven't thought about Upstairs at Eric's for awhile. "Only You" is a great single, but the whole album is really good. Thanks for bringing it back to mind!
My son wore headphones in his room all the time so he was silently present in my world. Then he would invite me in and talk about Dre and Beyonce, reveal what he was doing. Only after he had all this time to just be. Later he thanked me for the double glass doors in his room where he could look outside, at weather. There was a mandarin orange tree outside, trade winds and plenty of rain. It was a solid house.
Sensory overload is real.
