In 1991 I went with my girlfriend and others to Manuel's Tavern to watch the seventh game of the World Series featuring the Atlanta Braves and the Minnesota Twins. I was raised a Dodger fan growing up in LA, but this run by the Braves was so much fun. No one expected them to make the series and almost no one gave them a chance against the mighty Twins, who were absolutely loaded. But the Braves took it all the way to game seven and the city was Braves-crazy. I caught the bug as well.

This last game of the series was deliciously excruciating, a pitcher's duel for the ages. The game went into the tenth inning tied 0-0. Every pitch in the game drew a response from the folks in the bar. If one of our pitcher(s) threw a strike, there'd be a positive yip from the crowd. A ball drew a loud sigh. The tension was palpable, but it was so exciting. The Twins won on a run batted in in that tenth inning.

There was a sort of stunned silence in the bar. Girls were standing on tables crying quietly. Then someone somewhere in the place started to clap. Others joined in, then before you knew it, the crowd was cheering. This went on for what seemed like a good ten minutes. Our boys fell short, but they played their hearts out and nearly pulled off an upset of which no one thought they were capable. Two days later, even though the Braves lost the series, the city threw a parade for the team as if they'd won. One thing they did win was my heart and I've been a Braves fan ever since.

That is EPIC. My screenwriting teacher in film school was an avid Mets fan and they won (somehow) while we were in school and I never saw him stand so tall.
